David Brooks/ What advice for an editor

Editing is very different then a writer. When you are an editor you are a nursery school teacher. You have to have very good people skills. You have 500 reporters who want to be the head story. You have to have good people skills and know what to do to claim them down. It is a lot like being a teacher. You are doing something but not getting your name on the story so it is a lot of work and you will have reporters who always want to be on the front page and you would have reporters calling and crying so you have to know how to calm them down. You are like a teacher with your class going out and telling them what to do.

When asked about McCain and does he support him:
McCain is fun to be with. He cannot tell a lie. He will not always tell you the truth but he does not like to lie. He is a very honest guy and will be honest about everything. "I trust me life with him." There are plus and minus of everyone and McCain has his ups and downs. He is very disorganized. " I would defend him as a person." Brooks have traveled with McCain to Germany and other places.

Used to be four or five newspapers in New York. People under 40 dont read newpapers so our business is dying. There will be a future for the writer but I dont know what it will look like. There are a million blogs out there so he cannot write a column as fast as people can who blog.
